buren
Melissa Mabesoone and Oshin Albrecht established the collective ‘buren’ in 2012. buren functions as both a noun and a verb; an overarching term that characterises their practice, and a modus operandi. Through performance, video, text, objects, photography and installation, they move between ideas about community, homeliness, gender, (art) history and neoliberalist fantasies. Their work has a strong visual character with a specific focus on humour, the musicality of text, and sound as a means of communication. On the stage, they create a critical playing field with a dreamy dramaturgy.

buren’s cross-over practice can be found in various visual art and theatre contexts, including Playground (STUK / Museum M), viernulvier, Pukkelpop, de Brakke Grond, Netwerk Aalst, Galerie AmPolylog, Z33, kunstencentrum BUDA, Bâtard, Kaaitheater, Casco, Tatjana Pieter. They published work with het balanseer and Posture Editions. In 2016-17, buren completed a postgraduate at HISK. From 2020-24 they were part of the European Network Apap – Feminist Futures through BUDA, and since 2023 they have been one of Kaaitheater’s in-house artists.
